Reading a book in System 44 (Lexiles up to 450):

Once you have chosen a book to read, follow these easy steps-
  1. In the back of the room, there are two file cabinets. The top left drawer is labeled SYSTEM 44. Using the title of your book, find the correct folder.
  2. Once the folder is located, DO NOT remove it. Instead, open it up and take out one copy from the COMP. PACKET (in the tan folder). IF THERE ARE NO MORE PACKETS, PLEASE NOTIFY MRS. YOUNG. SHE WILL PRINT MORE COPIES.
  3. Go back to your seat, write your name and the date, and complete the QUICKWRITE and VOCABULARY sections of the packet. The quickwrite is your personal opinion, so answer it on your own. The vocabulary can be found on one of the very first pages in the book.
  4. Once you have completed the first two sections of the packet, put it aside. Read the book from cover to cover.
  5. On your second reading of the book, complete the rest of the packet.
  6. After completing the packet, go to the SYSTEM 44 file drawer, and remove one copy of the WRAP-UP (in the redfolder). IF THERE ARE NO MORE WRAP UP SHEETS, PLEASE NOTIFY MRS. YOUNG. SHE WILL PRINT MORE COPIES.
  7. Go back to your seat and complete this worksheet. Remember, it is ok to go back in the book to find your answers.
  8. Once both the COMP. PACKET and WRAP-UP are completed, staple them together and turn them in to the RED folder in the front of the room (under the hole puncher).
  9. Next, log onto Mrs. Young's website and click on the Reading Class (http://youngreadingesl.wikispaces.com)
  10. On the left-hand side of the screen, find the tab labeled SYSTEM 44 PROJECTS, and click on it.
  11. Locate the name of your book.
  12. Download the file attached; this will show you the directions to your mini-project.
  13. If extra materials/resources are needed for your mini-project (this will be indicated on the directions sheet), go back to the SYSTEM 44 file cabinet, locate your book title, and retrieve them from the PROJECT EXTRAS (in the PURPLE folder). Also, retrieve a project rubric in the YELLOW folder. IF THERE ARE NO MORE COPIES, PLEASE NOTIFY MRS. YOUNG. SHE WILL PRINT MORE COPIES.
  14. Complete the project on your own. You will work on this project during the "independent reading" time in class. Once completed, turn in your rubric (with your name on it) to the PURPLE folder in the front of the room (under the hole puncher). See Mrs. Young for instructions on how to turn projects in if you are confused.
  15. Now, you are ready to complete the online quiz. ONLY TAKE THE QUIZ IF THE PROJECT IS DONE AND YOUR RUBRIC IS TURNED IN! For this, you are not allowed to use any notes, the book, etc. Get a computer and go to the STUDENT ACCESS POINT. Make sure NOTHING else is on your desk!
  16. On the lower half of the page, find the icon called SCHOLASTIC READING COUNTS! (it is in the middle, underneath the icon called Read 180 Enterprise Edition). Click on this icon.
  17. Log in using your username and password.
  18. Click on the button labeled TAKE A QUIZ.
  19. If a quiz has not already been assigned to you, search using the title or author.
  20. Once you have finished the quiz, update page 314 in your rBook (this includes writing the day that you finished the book, the star rating, and the sentence starter). Also update the Yearly Reading Log located on the back of your binder.
  21. Finally, you can choose a new book to read. Update this in your rBook on pg 314 (title of book, date started, and type of book- Read 180 paperback or Other-System 44).
